Carronside Worship at South on 1st September

01 September 2019

Worship this morning was led by Dr Ibi Daramola our locum preacher and praise was led by organist and choirmaster David Sell. The evocative Graham Kendrick hymn ‘Such Love’ sung tenderly by the choir welcomed us all to worship.

Ibi’s address to the children focused on balloons. Much to the amusement of the congregation, the children did manage (eventually) to inflate the balloons and this experience was compared to ourselves when we allow the feeling that we are so much grander than or superior to others. When we inflate ourselves with false pride, our egos resemble bloated balloons …….easily deflated with a sharp pin. A graphic demonstration served to drive home the point as well as ensuring the congregation’s attention was focused!  We need to remember that all of which we are proud, has actually come as a gift from God. It is important that we never forget to thank God for our gifts and not take them for granted.

The balloon analogy tied in well with Ibi’s main reflection too. Being full on one’s own importance, jostling for the ’best seat in the house’ and following the example shown by Jesus are not compatible. Being aware of those less fortunate and addressing their needs as Jesus did, rather than pressing for fulfilment of our own wishes, will pave the way to an improved relationship with God.

So burst that balloon of self-importance and seek to help those less fortunate than ourselves. It’s the way to go!
