Communion Sunday 2nd February 2020

As the gathered congregation at Carronside met on Sunday morning they were abundantly blessed to have in their midst Rev Niyi Daramola who led the congregation in worship and in the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Our service commenced with Perronet and Rippon's famous hymn "All hail the power of Jesus name, let angels prostrate fall", after which Niyi led us in prayer. As we spent those moments in quiet prayerful reflection we experienced such a deep desire for Jesus' love within our souls which we then declared with the help of Graham Kendrick's rousing hymn "Lord, the light of your love is shining …… shine, Jesus, shine."

Our scripture lessons from the Book of Psalms and  Paul's first epistle to the Corinthians were read by Mrs Marshall.  Niyi's sermon was entitled "The Cross the Power of God" and was based on the message from Corinthians. He reminded us that the reason for the existence of this letter was because of Paul's need to address the disunity and quarrels that existed within the Christian Community. The Church in Corinth had divided themselves into groups each claiming a different leader - Peter, Apollos, Paul, Christ. In his letter Paul calls the people to Christian unity - the unifying force today as was then - is Christ's Cross - the Power and Wisdom of God. Such a message the essence of our faith as Christians was beyond the comprehension of the Jewish community which sought a powerful earthly Messiah and of the Greeks who sought truth through philosophical dialogue. For those in Christ, His Cross is God's gracious gift of forgiveness and eternal salvation for humanity.

The message of Christ's sacrificial death on the cross was then celebrated as commanded by our Lord in the Sacrament of Holy Communion in which we all partook of those elements of bread and wine - the body and blood of our Lord. Our service was concluded as we sang "Soon and very soon" …. looking forward towards that day when we are all in the eternal presence of God
